Via Otranto
Niche of recent construction, reminiscent of ancient stone structures. This houses a plaster/resin Padre Pio with a stone altar.
In the alley near number 4 of via Otranto, there is one of the last votive aedicules built in the ancient nucleus of Castellana Grotte. Commissioned by Massimo Schena, it is dedicated to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina: "His life was a continuous sacrifice, a continuous suffering, however, always devoted to the great love for Jesus... He always lived in humility, he was a loving advisor to all those who approached him, he knew always instilling courage and above all managed to bring many of those who had lost their faith back to God…”. In ancient times, the street was called strada Pergola in memory of when, and until a few decades ago, houses had grape pergolas as a useful external decoration, to create an area of shade, essentially the ancestor of modern parasols. “A pèrghele de l'ìuve” in dialect is also a nickname (Dizionario Castellanese, by don Nicola Pellegrino).
