Via de Consulibus

Madonna della Stella or Carmine fresco from the 1800s. Author Sabino Recchia painter from Castellana. Probably the oldest of the frescoes by his hand, his distinctive trait of the detached little finger of the hand is evident. Cleaned of dust, the original colors emerged.

From the square in the Local or Baronial Court, take via Macerasa, an ancient toponym that comes from Lama Cerasa, i.e. the Blade of Cherry trees, which recalls the strip of land that ran between two hills once used for growing cherry trees.
At the beginning of via Macerasa, on the right side and right on the Arco De Consulibus, also called Arco di Picóla (arch of Giuseppe Nicola), a stone frame with shells, contains a fresco dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine. The arch takes its name from the Palazzo de Consulibus which overlooks it, whose coat of arms is still visible next to the houses of the Baronial Court. The de Consulibus family was originally from Contursi, in the province of Salerno; and of this, we remember the doctor Giuseppe Valerio de Consulibus (1647-1739) who, following the death of his wife, followed the ecclesiastical path distinguishing himself, especially during the plague of 1690-92, in his dual mission of doctor and as a priest at the hospital in Monopoli.
